What are Metabolic Health Biomarkers?

Insulin

Insulin helps move sugar from your blood into your cells. Testing insulin levels can uncover early signs of insulin resistance or blood sugar imbalance—long before conditions like diabetes develop.

Example: Insulin is like a key that opens your cells to let sugar in. If the key isn’t working well, sugar builds up outside.

How it’s measured: Blood test taken after fasting (8–12 hours).

Leptin

Leptin is a hormone made by fat cells that tells your brain when to stop eating. When it’s not working properly, it can cause overeating, weight gain, and chronic inflammation.

Example: Leptin is like a fuel gauge for your brain—if it’s broken, you won’t know when you’re full.

How it’s measured: Blood test that measures serum leptin levels.

Uric Acid

Uric acid is a waste product from breaking down purines (found in food). High levels can lead to gout and may raise your risk of heart disease, stroke, or kidney issues.

Example: Uric acid is like ash from a fire—too much buildup can clog and damage your system.

How it’s measured: Blood test (and sometimes urine test) that measures uric acid levels.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)

This test shows your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. It’s used to diagnose and monitor prediabetes and diabetes.

Example: HbA1c is like a long-term report card for how your body handles sugar—not just a one-day snapshot.

How it’s measured: Blood test that measures how much glucose is attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells.

Glucose

Glucose is the main sugar your body uses for energy. Too much can lead to inflammation, fat storage, and chronic diseases like diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

Example: Glucose is like fuel—great in the right amount, but dangerous if it’s constantly overflowing.

How it’s measured: Blood test, typically done while fasting, to check current glucose levels.

Adiponectin

Adiponectin is a hormone that helps regulate metabolism, insulin response, and fat breakdown. Low levels are linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Example: Adiponectin is like your body’s internal coach—keeping metabolism sharp and inflammation low.

How it’s measured: Blood test measuring adiponectin concentration in the plasma or serum.
